4 Bad Habits Needed for a Productive Year

With the new year right around the corner and all of the good habits, traits and resolutions flying around I thought it'd be the perfect time to remind us all that some of the pre-conceived "negative" traits aren't all truly bad. When striving towards goals, some bad habits can not only be beneficial - they are also vital. Today I'd like to talk about the 4 which I think are the most important.
1. Be a Little Selfish
Yes. Selfish. Your spare-time, energy, and money are yours. No one else can lay claim to them without your consent. Being a bit more selfish can take you a lonngggg way in terms of accomplishing goals or just being happy. No more of the obligatory hours wasted watching shows you hate with your SO or BFF when you'd rather be reading or taking a walk (read: no more lack of compromise. Give and take folks). No more giving up on buying that new shirt you've been saving for because that one family member partied too hard early in the month and now can't pay their phone bill. Spend your stuff the way you want. And if that involves the true joy of being able to share your stuff with someone else...do it because the choice is yours!

2. Be Anti-Social
No don't go running off for any holes, but start looking around you. I'm certain you'll notice that one influencer or group of influencers who kinda put a damper on your plans and dreams. The ones who encourage you to blow money at the bar even when they know you want get your health together and that you're saving up for a house. This could also be that one family member who always discourages you to even attempt to do something you've always wanted to do. I know its sometimes hard to cut people off completely (especially if they're family), but limit the amount of time spent with them - your future self will thank you for it!

3. Be Self-Centered
Now this one kinda ties in with being selfish, but with a focus... You! If it doesn't make you happy (directly or indirectly) or bring you closer to your goals... don't do it. If you're tired and feeling a bit burnt out...take a day off. You are the main character in your story..act like it. Don't let the trappings of life pull you in every which way. Take care of yourself first! You can't truly help someone if your stuff isn't even together. Why do you think airlines tell you, in the event of an emergency, to put your mask on first before assisting anyone else. You can't pour from an empty cup people. Do whatever needs to be done to fill back up before getting back out there.

4. Brag
Okay this may surprise some of you. Now I agree, bragging is something you may want to avoid, but it can be a HUGE tool when done correctly. This revelation came to me while helping a coworker solve a problem...

Coworker: "Thanks! You're so smart"
Me:  "I know" *insert emoji with the shades*
Coworker: "..and modest"
Me: "Modesty is obscurity"

Not sure where that little wisdom nugget came from, maybe I had read it somewhere...who knows. What I do know is that there is a whole 'lotta truth in that statement. Think about it. You can be a superstar at work secretly putting out fires before the smoke is smelled by management or you can be that guy who stays late to fix another coworkers mistakes... and no one would know. Then you become bitter because the other person doing half of what you're doing is getting promoted faster. Gotta sing your praises, because if you don't...who will? - Tweet This

Hey Alex!

Nice one! Haha I really believe that saying “no” most of the time is beneficial. And yes, I believe that you can’t help others without helping yourself first — act of selfishness for good reasons and intentions. 😊

Helping others (which you cannot) without taking yourself just doesn’t make sense. The result is both parties are worse off!

Great tips for the new year!

AHHH these are so good. Actually, everyone should read these.

It's okay to be selfish, it's okay to do things to make yourself happy, it's okay to decide whether or not you want to be anti-social...and it's okay to brag a lil' bit!

Bookmarking so I can remember when I feel alone + at the reins of everyone else.
